FAQs

I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Does this mean there is something wrong with me? Does it mean I am not a good parent?

Not at all. People who seek help know when they need it and have the courage to reach out. Everyone needs help now and then. We will work together to  explore and identify factors that lead to many different challenges.

What’s the difference between working with you or getting help from a book / magazine, website, or friend / family member?

The difference is between something you can read, and someone who has the training and experience to do that same thing professionally. A professional is trained to help you approach your situation in a new way– identify vital information, teach you and your child new skills, and gain new / different perspectives. Furthermore, our work is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.”

Why shouldn’t I just take medication or give my child medication?

Medication can be effective but medication, alone, cannot solve all issues. Sometimes medication is needed in conjunction with learning skills. Our work together is designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing and expand on your child’s strengths.

How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?

Imrpovements in the identified areas depend on our work together. That means you, as the parent, will have a vital role during the sessions. Rather than your child learning and practicing skills only during the session, the hope is that, with your active involvement, many of the skills will be practiced outside each session in your home and in the community.

How long will it take for things to improve?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to say, in general. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time needed can depend many factors.
